Equities market closes on a negative note …ASI loses 166 Basis Point
The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) closed negative as bears dominated proceedings in the market today. The benchmark All Share Index (ASI) depreciated by 1.66% to close at 39,156.28. Similarly, Market Capitalization decreased by 339 billion to close at N20.07 trillion while the Year-to-Date (YtD) returns settled at -4.38%
What shaped today’s market direction?
Today’s market direction can be largely attributed to losses recorded in large and mid-cap stocks in Banking, Agriculture and Consumer goods sector. Some of today’s market losers include: AIRTELAFRI (-10.00%), OKOMU (-9.44%), LIVESTOCK (-4.74%), AFRIPRUD (-3.97%), PRESCO (-2.50%), STANBIC (-2.44%), UACN (-2.06%), UCAP (-1.62%), GUARANTY (-1.38%), TRANSCORP (-1.11%), FLOURMILLS (-1.00%), FCMB (-0.96%), UBA (-0.70%) and DANGSUGAR (-0.28%) amongst others.
Sectors performance was Broadly Bullish
Performance across sectors was broadly bullish as 3 out of 5 sectors closed in the green zone. Banking, Insurance and Oil and Gas advanced by 0.16%, 0.41% and 0.13% respectively. While Consumer Goods Index declined by 0.18% respectively. Industrial Index remained unchanged.
Market activity measured by aggregate volume increased by 2.86% while value increased by 2.96%. Investors traded a total of 297 million units of shares valued at N3.65 billion in 4,402 deals.
Market breadth measured by Advancers/Decliners was positive as it closed at 0.70x indicating a bullish mood. At the close of trading : CWG (9.73%), BERGER (6.72%), NEM (3.89%), WAPIC (3.64%), ACCESS (3.05%), MANSARD (2.27%), ETI (1.97%), OANDO (1.69%), UNILEVER (1.56%), FIDELITY (0.89%), ZENITH (0.86%) and MTNN (0.18%) were amongst the 19 market gainers, while AIRTELAFRI (-10.00%), OKOMU (-9.44%), LIVESTOCK (-4.74%), AFRIPRUD (-3.97%), PRESCO (-2.50%), STANBIC (-2.44%), UACN (-2.06%), UCAP (-1.62%), GUARANTY (-1.38%), TRANSCORP (-1.11%), FLOURMILLS (-1.00%), FCMB (-0.96%), UBA (-0.70%) and DANGSUGAR (-0.28%) were among the 27 market laggards. 60 stock prices remained unchanged.
The Banking sector emerged as the most active sector. Equities of Access, Sterling, and Zenith were the most active in the subsector as 138 million units of shares worth N1.27 Billion were traded in 2,656 transactions. Access, Sterling, and Zenith accounted for 74% of the total volume traded in the subsector.
Insurance came second ahead of Other Financial Institutions. Equities of MANSARD and SOVRENINS were the most active in the subsector as 35 million units of shares worth N698 million were traded in 698 transactions. Trading in the Equities of MANSARD and SOVRENINS accounted for 49% of the total volume traded in the subsector.
NASD Market
The NASD market closed positive after today’s trading activities as the Unlisted Securities Index (USI) increased by 0.77% to close at 751.95. Consequently, Market Capitalization also closed at N534.49 billion. Market activity measured by aggregate volume increased by 75.79% while value increased by 74.10%. Investors traded a total of 6,514,831 units of shares valued at N129 million in 34 deals.
