Equities market closes on a Flat note…ASI Loses 1 Basis Point

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) closed flat as bears dominated proceedings in the market today. The benchmark All Share Index (ASI) depreciated by 0.01% to close at 38,324.07. Similarly, Market Capitalization decreased by 2 billion to close at N19.95 trillion while the Year-to-Date (YtD) returns settled at -4.83%.

Sectors performance was Broadly Bearish

Performance across sectors was broadlybearish as 3 out of 5 sectors closed in the red zone. Banking, Oil and gas and Industrial indices declined by 0.25%, 0.26% and 0.09% respectively, on the back of sell pressures recorded in the shares of CHAMS (-9.09%), JBERGER (-9.05%), OANDO (-3.33%), PZ (-1.85%), FIDELITY (-1.72%), AIICO (-1.55%), GUARANTY (-0.85%), ACCESS (-0.60%), UCAP (-0.33%) and BUACEMENT (-0.20%) amongst othersWhile Consumer goods and Insurance Indices advanced by 0.04% and 1.19% respectively, on the back of buy interests in the shares of WAPIC (8.00%), MBENEFIT (4.76%), TRANSCORP (2.66%), MANSARD (1.12%) and DANGSUGAR (0.58%).

NASD Market

The NASD market closed positive after today’s trading activities as the Unlisted Securities Index (USI) increased by 1.25% to close at 773.99. Consequently, Market Capitalization also closed positive at N549.74 billion. Market activity measured by aggregate volume decreased by 19.46% while value decreased by 10.83%. Investors traded a total of  3,021,423 units of shares valued at N72.68 million in 38 deals.

Equities market closes on a Negative note…ASI Loses 148 Basis Point

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) closed negative as bears dominated proceedings in the market today. The benchmark All Share Index (ASI) depreciated by 1.48% to close at 38,445.09. Similarly, Market Capitalization decreased by 301 billion to close at N20.04 trillion while the Year-to-Date (YtD) returns settled at -4.53%.

Sectors performance was Broadly Bearish

Performance across sectors was broadlybearish as 3 out of 5 sectors closed in the red zone. Banking, Consumer goods and Insurance indices declined by 0.62%, 0.32% and 0.61% respectively, on the back of sell pressures recorded in the shares of AIRTEL (-10.00%), DANGSUGAR (-3.93%), ZENITH (-2.13%), UACN (-0.96%), STANBIC (-0.88%), UBN (-0.83%), FBNH (-0.70%), GUARANTY (-0.51%), UCAP (-0.49%) and DANGCEM (-0.47%) amongst othersWhile Oil and Gas and Industrial Indices advanced by 7.11% and 0.85% respectively, on the back of buy interests in the shares of SEPLAT (10.00%), MRS (10.00%), BUACEMENT (2.48%), TRANSCORP (2.33%) and ETERNA (0.38%).

NASD Market

The NASD market closed positive after today’s trading activities as the Unlisted Securities Index (USI) increased by 1.03% to close at 763.84. Consequently, Market Capitalization also closed positive at N542.95 billion. Market activity measured by aggregate volume decreased by 4.04% while value increased by 9.29%. Investors traded a total of  3,668,684 units of shares valued at N78.43million in 42 deals..

Headline Inflation drops to 18.12% in April 2021; 0.05% lower than March 2021(18.17%)

Dear Client/Reader,

The National Bureau of Statistics just reported that the consumer price index, (CPI) which measures inflation decreased to 18.12% (year-on-year) in April 2021. This is 5 basis points lower than the rate recorded in March 2021 (18.17%).

The percentage change in the average composite CPI for the twelve months period ending April 2021 over the average of the CPI for the previous twelve months period was 15.04%, representing a 0.49 percentage point increase over 14.55% recorded in March 2021.

Food Index Declines to 22.72%

Food index declined to 22.72% in April 2021. The average annual rate of change of the Food sub-index for the twelve-month period ending April 2021 over the previous twelve-month average was 18.58 percent, 0.65 percent points from the average annual rate of change recorded in March 2021 (17.93%). 

This decline in the food index was caused by the decrease in prices of Coffee, tea and cocoa, Bread and cereals, Soft drinks, Milk, Cheese and eggs, Potatoes, Yam and other tubers, Meat, Vegetable, Fish and Oils and Fats. On a month-on-month basis, the food sub-index decreased to 0.99% in April 2021, down by 0.91 percent points from 1.90% recorded in March 2021.

Core Index stood at 12.74%

Price movements recorded by the Core index stood at 12.74% (year -on-year) in April 2021, up by 7 basis points as against 12.67% recorded in March 2021. The highest increases were recorded in prices of Furniture and Finishing, Garments, Shoes and Other footwears, Hospital services,  Pharmaceutical products, Vehicle spare parts, Dental Services, Motor cars, Non-durable household goods, Major household appliances whether electric or not,  Fuel and lubricants for personal transport equipment and Hairdressing saloons and personal grooming establishment.

Urban Index decreased to 18.68%

The Urban index decreased to 18.68% (year-on-year) in April 2021 compared to 18.76% recorded in March 2021, while the Rural index decreased to 17.57% (year -on-year) in April 2021 as against 17.60% in March 2021. On a month-on-month basis, the urban index declined to 0.99% in April 2021, down by 0.61 percent compared to the rate recorded in March 2021, while the rural index also declined to 0.95% in April 2021, down by 0.57 percent below the rate that was recorded in March 2021 (1.52%).

Similarly, Market Capitalization decreased by 148 billion to close at N20.34 trillion while the Year-to-Date (YtD) returns settled at -3.10%.

Sectors performance was Broadly Bearish

Performance across sectors was broadlybearish as 3 out of 5 sectors closed in the red zone. Insurance, Consumer goods and Industrial indices declined by 1.37%, 0.05% and 2.57% respectively, on the back of sell pressures recorded in the shares of REGALINS (-8.11%), BUACEMENT (-5.71%), LIVESTOCK (-5.26%), FIDELITY (-3.78%), FBNH (-2.72%), TRANSCORP (-2.27%), UCAP (-1.90%), ZENITHBANK (-0.84%), AFRIPRUD (-0.83%) and UACN (-0.48%) amongst othersWhile Oil and Gas and Banking Indices advanced by 0.03% and 0.26% respectively, on the back of buy interests in the shares of ETERNA (9.93%), UBN (5.26%), ETI (1.89%), STANBIC (1.56%), MRS (0.92%), OANDO (0.67%) and FCMB (0.33%).

NASD Market

The NASD market closed negative after today’s trading activities as the Unlisted Securities Index (USI) decreased by  1.61% to close at 756.04. Consequently, Market Capitalization also closed negative at N537.40 billion. Market activity measured by aggregate volume decreased by 82.11% while value increased by 83.03%. Investors traded a total of  3,526,135 units of shares valued at N71.76million in 54 deals.

Similarly, Market Capitalization decreased by 91 billion to close at N20.49 trillion while the Year-to-Date (YtD) returns settled at -2.39%.

Sectors performance was Broadly Bearish

Performance across sectors was broadlybearish as 3 out of 5 sectors closed in the red zone. Banking, Insurance, Consumer goods and Industrial indices declined by 0.59%, 0.29%, 0.09% and 0.66% respectively, on the back of sell pressures recorded in the shares of AFRIPRUD (-6.92%), WAPCO (-2.42%), ACCESS (-2.37%), STANBIC (-2.17%), GUINNESS (-1.72%), GUARANTY (-1.67%), BUACEMENT (-1.16%), MTNN (-1.05%), DANGSUGAR (-0.85%) and FCMB (-0.66%)amongst othersWhile Oil and Gas Index advanced on the back of buy interests in the shares of ETERNA (9.85%) and OANDO (0.34%).

NASD Market

The NASD market remained unchanged after today’s trading activities as the Unlisted Securities Index (USI) closed at 768.42. Consequently, Market Capitalization also remained unchanged to close at N546.20billion. Market activity measured by aggregate volume decreased by 62.80% while value increased by 87.07%. Investors traded a total of  19,711,016 units of shares valued at N422.94million in 55 deals.
