Daily Financial Market Report for May 18, 2021

Equities market closes on a Negative note…ASI Loses 72 Basis Point

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) closed negative as bears dominated proceedings in the market today. The benchmark All Share Index (ASI) depreciated by 0.72% to close at 39,022.52. Similarly, Market Capitalization decreased by 148 billion to close at N20.34 trillion while the Year-to-Date (YtD) returns settled at -3.10%.

Sectors performance was Broadly Bearish

Performance across sectors was broadlybearish as 3 out of 5 sectors closed in the red zone. Insurance, Consumer goods and Industrial indices declined by 1.37%, 0.05% and 2.57% respectively, on the back of sell pressures recorded in the shares of REGALINS (-8.11%), BUACEMENT (-5.71%), LIVESTOCK (-5.26%), FIDELITY (-3.78%), FBNH (-2.72%), TRANSCORP (-2.27%), UCAP (-1.90%), ZENITHBANK (-0.84%), AFRIPRUD (-0.83%) and UACN (-0.48%) amongst othersWhile Oil and Gas and Banking Indices advanced by 0.03% and 0.26% respectively, on the back of buy interests in the shares of ETERNA (9.93%), UBN (5.26%), ETI (1.89%), STANBIC (1.56%), MRS (0.92%), OANDO (0.67%) and FCMB (0.33%).

NASD Market

The NASD market closed negative after today’s trading activities as the Unlisted Securities Index (USI) decreased by  1.61% to close at 756.04. Consequently, Market Capitalization also closed negative at N537.40 billion. Market activity measured by aggregate volume decreased by 82.11% while value increased by 83.03%. Investors traded a total of  3,526,135 units of shares valued at N71.76million in 54 deals.
